Itinerant Sea is the newest edition in the archive. It is part of a longer series of coastal walks — three years of returning to shorelines at unusual times, in unusual light.
The word itinerant is important. These are not images of specific places. They are images of a particular kind of movement: slow, repeated, without destination.
The image
The print shows a wide coastal horizon, taken in the late evening on the North Yorkshire coast. The sea is flat, almost metallic. The sky is heavier than the water, which reverses the usual expectation. There is a strip of pale light at the join — the actual horizon — that holds the whole image together.
Paper and process
Archival pigment on Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gsm. The weight of the paper matters for this image — lighter papers lose the density in the sky. The 308gsm holds the shadow detail without going flat.
