"I wanted the sea to lose its horizon — to stop being a view and become a motion instead. Cutting the photograph into segments and turning it back on itself felt like the only honest way to show water: it never really has an edge, it just keeps arriving."
Itinerant Wave (small) began as a photograph of open water — a fleeting study of light, movement, and surface texture. Rather than presenting the sea as a single frozen moment, the image has been deconstructed into segments and reassembled around a central axis, so that the wave's motion folds continuously back into itself.
The result is a piece that sits between photography and pattern-making: recognisably drawn from the natural world, yet abstracted into something closer to a mandala or a mechanism — a wave that never breaks, never recedes, only circulates.
The title reflects this quality of restlessness without arrival. "Itinerant" speaks to water's constant travelling nature — moving, returning, moving again — while the circular composition gives that movement a fixed, contained form. It is both a portrait of the sea and a meditation on repetition, tide, and time.
